What class do I register for?All freshmen register for Symphonic Band - 9 (Course 758-01). There is no separate course for Marching Band/Symphonic Band.
What is the time commitment for participating in High School Band? The band primarily meets in rehearsal during the day. Each band member is responsible for preparing their music for rehearsals and performance. That means...practice! If you practice efficiently and consistently, this should not be difficult. Occasionally there will be sectional rehearsals after school as well leading up to performances.
In the fall, we have one evening rehearsal each week on Thursdays from 6:30-8:30pm to put all elements of the marching band field show together. We typically perform at each home football game in the Fall. Our concert schedule includes:
Additionally, we perform at the annual FHM Fundraiser and the HHS Graduation in June. What is Band Camp?Band Camp is a week-long event which includes music rehearsals, sectionals, drill rehearsals, and lots of fun activities which help us bond as an ensemble. It takes place at Camp Wind in the Pines in Plymouth each year in August. It is here that we learn the majority of our "field show" which will be perfected and performed throughout the Fall. As a freshmen, you will:
Before Band Camp, we will get you started with a New Member Orientation Day so you have a head start learning drill commands and how to move on the field with precision and pride. |
Do I really have to do Marching Band?At HHS, we believe in exposing instrumentalists to many aspects of performing instrumental music including marching, chamber, jazz, and traditional concert ensembles.
Marching band is part of the history of American bands - plus, it's a great way to give back to your community! During the months of August-November the HHS Band focuses on content and skills related to marching band. Performing in the "Pride of Hanover" Marching Band has the following perks:
Ask anyone currently in the band, and you probably hear that although they were nervous at first, Marching Band is one of their favorite parts of the year. We encourage anyone "on the fence" to try it! Can I be involved in both athletics and music at HHS?Yes! Many of our student musicians are also fine athletes. We work hard to make sure that there are no conflicts between music and athletic events. At HHS, musicians and athletes support each other and work together as a team.
How is High School Band different from Middle School?High School ensembles meet every day, so we are able to progress faster and learn more music in much greater detail. Middle School prepares you with all of the tools you need to be a great ensemble member. High School is where you start to apply those skills! High School Band also allows you to play music of a higher caliber from a variety of different composers and genres.
The expectations are higher for each individual, but we work to make sure band is place for everyone to thrive and improve. No one "sits the bench" in band, and every instrument is important. We have a tradition of excellence that we hope you will become a part of. Can I play in Jazz at HHS?At HHS, we have a long tradition of excellence performing and studying Jazz! Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned ensemble consisting of rhythm section, saxophones, trumpets, and trombones. This ensemble meets after school on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:30.
We also offer a "Jazz Lab" band for students who are just learning jazz or who want to get more experience before joining Jazz Ensemble. Jazz Lab meets Wednesday after school and is open to all students on all instruments! Anyone is welcome to come "jam" and learn more about jazz style and improvisation. |
